Why we Need to Prevent Harassment
When it comes to discussing violence in any form and shape, we are quick to talk about who the violence was perpetrated against and not who perpetrated the violence. Some time ago I contributed with a piece for DIIS about the Beijing Platform for Action, which had a particular focus on the elimination of violence against women.
In that article I wrote in one of the first editions how the former Danish Minister for Equal Opportunities stated that “we need to stop the violence, before it starts”. I couldn't agree more. This should be in terms of all types of violence and discrimination.
The only effective way to do this is through teaching. And no - I am not talking about 5+5= 10. I am talking about soft skills. How does language shape our reality? How does culture shape it? How can language be harmful? How can it be inclusive?
You get my drift. So with all types of violence, including harassment, bullying, discrimination and so on, we need to teach people how not to act. We need to teach them how their actions might hurt other people. We need to teach them to step in and speak up when they witness how people are harming others.
When we prevent harm before it is done, we are protecting all parties. When we prevent harm before it is done we are improving the lives and health of all of us. The road to get there is not simple, but it will be worth it.
Teaching. Reflecting. Dialogue. Simple tools that create a basis for changing a harmful world to an inclusive and prosperous one.
