How To Deal With 1st World Guilt
It makes no sense to use the terms 1st, 2nd and 3rd world. However, in the context of this video I refer to 1st world problems and 1st world guilt. Simply, because there are differences in access to rights, opportunities and security depending on where you were born. I was born in Denmark - a fairly egalitarian society, where I have access to education and health care. That is not the case for everyone in the world. While it may suggest underlying power structures to use this term of 1st world and I do see the problem in using it, I am using it in lack of a better way to decribe the guilt that I feel. A guilt that comes from having things handed to me that others do not have the access to. A guilt that tells me that others are worse off. That is also the case. However, in order to deal with the guilt we must first accept that it exists. Secondly, we must use our knowledge, anger and compassion to impact the world positively.
