How Your Life Creates Value In The World

There is a reason you were born. It may not be a big purposeful reason - like you are here to solve some of our time’s biggest issues. That does not matter. Whatever you are here to do it will bring value in different forms and for different people.

Just through your existence you are improving the world. Even if it is not visible to you. You will never be able to see the traces you have left from your lived life. Of course people may tell you how they feel about you and the value that you bring to the world, but it will not be as evident when you are here as when you are not.

Your contributions to the world may be visible to some extent while you are here, but even more so, when you are not. Change happens on multiple levels. One thing is certain. You bring more value to the world than you think. You bring value to the world in different forms. Most importantly you bring value to the world just by being here.

Your existence is improving the world. In your interactions with other people you also make the world a better place. This is whether you interact with strangers or with people you know and love. Of course the value that you bring can be dependent on how you feel about yourself and what you are struggling with in your own life.

You will always be bringing value, when you are kind and empathetic. If you are struggling you can still bring a lot of value to the world, but when you have strategies to deal with your struggles constructively you can bring even more value to the world. I am not writing this from an intention of discouraging you.

I am writing it from a perspective of dealing with struggles that are limiting me in my own life. I believe that when I have healed and learned to deal with these struggles I will be able to multiply the value that I bring into the world. Sometimes friends with mental illness tell me that they simply do not have the energy to transition to a more sustainable lifestyle.

I completely understand. However, this does not mean that they are not giving and adding value in other ways. We all have resources. We all have internal power. Both can be used to better the world. Of course there are different resources we have depending on where we live, who we are and where we were born.

I know that I am among the most privileged people in the world. I am a white, educated cis-woman. I have more stuff than I need. I do my best in giving back to other people and the environment. And I believe that you are doing the same, whether it is consciously or subconsciously. We all do our best. Forgive yourself and accept that you are doing what you can with the resources you have. If you feel like you are not, then know that you will be able to gradually increase your giving back, when you gain more resources - whether they be mentally or physically (money).

It is not only in your connections and interactions with other people that you bring value to the world. You bring value through your actions. Whether they are interactions or not. With this I mean every small or big action you take. The nature of the action is not important in itself, the point is that the action has an outcome.

Either it has done something good for the world, it has had a neutral impact or it has had a negative impact. I am not going to be the judge of what is good or bad, but I would say that anything bringing us closer to a more empathetic, equal and sustainable world is a good action. It could be something as small as liking a post on Instagram. It could be picking up a piece of trash. It could be using public transportation instead of your car. It could be being present and listening in a conversation. Know this: You bring value to the world.
