As a recent graduate: How do I get a job?

As a recent graduate one thing, in particular, seems to be in the way of entering the labour market:
A lack of experience.

But what if you do have experience?

What if you have more than 10 years of experience from volunteer work?

Should there still be a barrier to enter the labour market?
Or has the barrier just changed?

As a recent graduate I have sent a lot of applications. I have had some interviews. Either I was deemed ‘overqualified’, because I was honest about my dreams and ambitions or else I was told that I did not have enough experience from Denmark.

As a recent graduate I have started to become frustrated. I have to constantly rethink my approach to applying for jobs alongside gathering the experience that I do not have - or that I do in fact have, but it is not from Denmark.

How much does it really take for me to enter the labour market?
I have knowledge. I have competencies. I have experience.

But is it enough?
Or have we started to make such unrealistic demands in society that only a minority of recent graduates can meet them?

Do you need to have a big network with just the right amount of people? Do you have to have had X number of coffee meetings and X number of phone calls? Do you need to have specialised experience within many fields?

I wonder what even is realistic to expect from people that recently finished their degrees.

Is there even room for recent graduates in the labour market? Where does the boundary go? When will there be room for everyone?

If the problem is not the experience, the competencies, the personality or the knowledge one has gained throughout their degree - then what is the problem?

Is it the body you were born in? Is it the beliefs you carry? Is it the age you have? Are there other structural reasons for not being able to enter the labour market?

I cannot know. All I can do is be happy to have a “Danish sounding” name and that I do not wear a headscarf or have a dark skin colour. If I did my opportunities would have been even smaller.

So how do you land the famous first job. How much does it take?
